Hizb ut-Tahrir and the Struggle for Khilafah

In the House of Commons this week, the former Home Secretary, John Reid, confirmed what for some time has been an open secret – that despite the pressure on the UK government to ban Hizb ut-Tahrir from dictators in the Muslim world, like President Musharraf and President Karimov, there has been no evidence whatsoever to link Hizb ut-Tahrir to terrorism or violence.

Former Home Secretary John Reid pointed to two recent reviews of Hizb ut-Tahrir which concluded there was “not sufficient evidence” for it to be banned. Reid added that, “nothing would be more politically disadvantageous than taking a case without evidence and then losing it…It would confirm all of the accusations made against us.”

For over fifty years, Hizb ut-Tahrir has been at the forefront of the political work in the Muslim world to end tyranny and dictatorship. Tony Blair’s proposal to ban Hizb ut-Tahrir in August 2005 was intended to stop our political work to replace western backed dictators in the Muslim world. We accept that it is undoubtedly true that our organisation causes the government considerable political and diplomatic discomfort, in that our campaigning against dictators in the Muslim world, many of whom are allies of the government – such as General Musharraf and Presidents Karimov and Mubarak - exposes its hypocrisy.

Hizb ut-Tahrir works for the return of the Khilafah in the Muslim world - an Islamic system of government with an accountable leadership, chosen through the authority of the people, in which the rule of law would replace the tyranny that currently exists. A recent study by the University of Maryland found that there was over 70 per cent support for the Shariah and the Khilafah in the Muslim world.

Dear Brother and Sisters!

Islam, in particular its political ideas such as Shariah, Khilafah and Jihad, are today attacked under the guise of attacking ‘Islamism’. ‘Islamism’ was a term created to label those Muslims who stand up to colonialism, speak out against dictators and desire the return of Islam to state and society in the Muslim world. Shariah is attacked as backward and oppressive, Khilafah as an ‘evil ideology’ and Jihad as ‘terrorism’. Even doing actions for Allah’s (swt) sake or seeking Jannah are now described as ‘extremist’ beliefs.

Despite the intense scrutiny that our community finds itself under, Hizb ut-Tahrir invites you to join with it in continuing its struggle to expose the colonial policies of western governments in the Muslim world and create a positive public opinion about Islam as a way of life and the Khilafah as a new state and civilization that will free the Muslim world from chaos, instability and injustice.

“O you who believe! If you help (in the cause of) Allah, He will help you, and make your foothold firm.” [TMQ 47: 7]
